The Rio Grande Foundation made waves a few months ago with a proposal to merge UNM and NMSU’s football teams. While the proposal is unlikely to become a reality, it is also a reality that major college athletics and publicly-funded universities are a poor fit.
RGF was asked to discuss the Paul Krebs indictment for a story (click on the screen shot below). Krebs is in legal hot water for misuse of university funds. Although not included in the story, it is clear that there are inherent problems with accountability and transparency in the use of government funds that don’t always translate well to the world of major college sports.
UNM is definitely not alone, nor is Mr. Krebs. We’ll be watching how this situation pans out in the months ahead.
