The New Mexico Legislature raised taxes in 2019. Democrat supporters of raising taxes like Rep. Javier Martinez argued that past “budget cuts and spending reductions” have now “caught up to the state.” Not surprisingly, when examined under the light of day, the case for higher taxes (as measured in numerous national reports including this one from Wallethub) show that New Mexico actually has relatively heavy tax burdens.

Every other state around New Mexico has a lower tax burden and is growing much faster in population. Perhaps New Mexico’s problem is not supposedly inadequate tax revenue?
