NM state/local spending vastly outstrips more prosperous neighbors (and is only exceeded by three states)

Americans were just given more evidence that federal spending is simply out of control, but when it comes to the states, which ones are the biggest-spenders? The answer according to the website US Government Spending which tracks a variety of government is that after Alaska, Mississippi, and Wyoming, New Mexico spends the most overall when state and local spending are combined (as a percentage of GDP).

The truly astonishing thing is that looking at state spending only Colorado, a “purple” state that is now pretty “blue” (and Texas, a red state) spend less than half of what New Mexico’s state government does as a percent of GDP. With an oil boom going on in New Mexico and spending hikes all around, New Mexico’s big-spending ways show no signs of slowing down.
