As we at the Rio Grande Foundation (and many others) have noted repeatedly in recent years, New Mexico has had a rough decade economically since the Great Recession. While things are looking up somewhat in the last year or two New Mexico still lags the region rather dramatically over the past year when it comes to job growth according to the Pew Center on the States.
The fact that New Mexico continues to lag its region so dramatically while benefiting from unprecedented oil production growth (tripling since 2012) is an illustration of just how much New Mexico policymakers must do to transform the economy in a free market direction.
