Tell Albuquerque City Council: no misleading “sick leave” summaries on fall ballot!

On Monday at a special ABQ City Council Meeting, left-wing proponents of the mandatory paid sick leave ballot measure are expected to attempt to override the Mayor’s veto of their latest effort to put a misleading summary on the ballot.

City Councilors, particularly those up for election, are getting intense pressure to override the veto.

We need a significant showing of employers and taxpayers to assure the supportive city councilors that their vote against an override is important. If you cannot make it, please send a note to the Council here.

Your presence WILL make a difference.

If you CAN make it, be at City Hall

Monday, July 10, at 4:30 (this Monday)

City Hall, One Civic Plaza, NW Albuquerque, NM 87102

See you there!

Here are 10 Reasons You should be VERY concerned about SICK LEAVE on the October Ballot (you can read the text here)

  1. All Employers: Large, Small, for Profit and Nonprofit will have to pay sick leave and adhere to “one-size-fits-all policies.”
  2. The ballot measure specifically exempts unions.
  3. If the employer takes ANY ADVERSE ACTION against an employee within 90 days of taking sick leave it is presumed the employer is retaliating against the employee, which is a punishable violation under this ordinance.
  4. Your Sick Leave Policy Will Change to be in compliance with the ordinance.
  5. If the employer requires a doctor’s note to prove sickness, the employer pays for the doctor’s visit.
  6. The City Attorney can audit and investigate your records with penalties payable to the city. This is monetary incentive for the city to make sure you are doing something wrong.
  7. Triple monetary damages and payment for attorney’s to the employee if they prevail. Nothing for the employer if they prevail.
  8. The ordinance allows for punitive litigation including: Class Action, three times monetary damages including lost wages, possible reinstatement, civil penalties of $50 per week per employee, employees attorney fees.
  9. This ordinance cannot be changed by the City Council.
  10. You can calculate the cost to your business at
