John Trever of the Journal always has a perceptive take on the political situation in New Mexico. His latest cartoon from Sunday is as usual spot-on.

It’s a bit of a stereotype. Imagine what he would have deSantis or Abbot saying (have more teachers resign, return Christianity to public schools, ship more children to Minnesota, start shooting “illegals”, require residents to own a firearm?) Of course, those are more popular with the right. I’m not a fan of MLG but let’s have some realistic suggestions for all that money you, of course, give her no credit for obtaining, though you would give it to a Republican governor in a heartbeat.
Let’s be clear, MLG didn’t “obtain” the surplus, it came from oil and gas. We have plenty of realistic proposals most notably gross receipts tax reform, but fundamental reduction of New Mexico’s anti-growth taxes would be the right approach. No politician or state should retain the amounts of money we do here in New Mexico and I’m not just referring to this surplus, but also the permanent funds.
