Florida vs California: there’s no comparison

Tonight as I write this Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis and California Gov. Gavin Newsom are going to debate.  It would seem that there is little to discuss (at least economically) as Florida crushes California (see chart below).

How does New Mexico play into this? We know that Gov. Lujan Grisham considers California and Gavin Newsom here model. Her EV regulations which put New Mexico in lockstep with California are just one of several examples of her California-centric approach.

Needless to say, we believe that New Mexico would thrive if just a few of Florida’s policies (including education reform which is not addressed below) were introduced here. Sadly, politicians and powerful special interest groups prefer the California model because they can gain politically and financially from centralized power.

If New Mexicans want better outcomes in their state they need to embrace politicians that embrace the Florida model.

    1. GDP per capita is hardly a defining statistic. California is clearly a state in decline, losing population and economic vitality that it had built up over decades. Florida is clearly growing and rising in its economic performance.

      1. It’s not “clearly in decline” at all and you provide no evidence to support that except for your opinion and right wing political statements. That isn’t to say it has no problems and some need to be dealt with immediately. Maybe we should follow the lead of the DeSantis and send all of our new immigrants and homeless people to Florida.

  1. Yes let’s become more like FL and ban books and abortions and discriminate against gays and LGQTB communities , outlaw youth transition treatments . Only keep Latinos if they are Cubans and ship all other migrants to other states. Allow assault weapons for individual safety . Only reason FL is economically better is credit to a CA company called Disney.

    1. As you can see a lot of this brouha about Florida is a lot of right-wing wish fulfillment. And in truth none of these states are as bad or as good as politicians would like to pretend they are. And I don’t notice the California governor trying to get into a fight with Disney. And, correct me if I’m wrong, it looked like Elon moved back to California from Texas.
