Hull is 100% on New Mexico’s dependency problem
In what amounts to a pathetic attempt to divert attention from decades of policy failures, Democrats are expressing feigned “outrage” over comments by Republican gubernatorial candidate Gregg Hull. Those comments focus on the fact that New Mexico’s poor outcomes and outsized levels of government dependency despite New Mexico’s massive budget infusions from the oil and gas industry.
Hull noted Mississippi and New Mexico used to be tied for the lowest reading scores in the country, but Mississippi has pulled ahead. Hull said Mississippi’s former governor, Phil Bryant, told him that achievement was based on education reforms that came from New Mexico’s former governor, Republican Susana Martinez.
“Your Legislature wouldn’t adopt it, but mine did. Now we’re way up the list, and you guys are still at the bottom,” Hull recalled Bryant saying.
Hull also decried New Mexico’s over-dependence on SNAP, Medicaid, and the fact that the State’s new taxpayer-funded childcare program is yet another new “welfare” program.
Of course, Democrats are eager to portray Gregg Hull as “just like Donald Trump.” Trump says a lot of things, many of them questionable, but Hull’s New Mexico is in a MUCH different position than the US. The United States as a whole outperforms New Mexico on nearly every category while the State of New Mexico sits on a pile of cash but sucks up money, especially cash for welfare programs, from Washington despite being in an EXTREMELY strong financial position.
Hull has plans to improve upon New Mexico’s dismal results. The Democrat-controlled Legislature will be an obstacle, but he can at least prevent 4 or 8 years of abject failure by Deb Haaland.
