New Mexico Democrats will ram more spending through another special session

Gov. Lujan Grisham is calling yet another special session for Monday to pour New Mexico tax dollars into the SNAP program (food stamps) that Democrats in the US Senate are keeping the federal government shut down. This is yet another opportunity for the majority to ram through more spending and put it into a welfare program that is open to abuse and allows far too many in New Mexico to avoid work.

We understand that fundamental reform of SNAP is necessary. Ideally SNAP would be a state program funded by state dollars which would limit the incentive for abuse. New Mexico needs to use its considerable oil and gas largesse to diversify its economy and move more New Mexicans into the workforce (our participation rate is deplorable) and off welfare.

But, MLG and her party seems to prefer to keep New Mexicans dependent on the government (and thus willing to reelect them).

Votes on spending New Mexico tax dollars to prop up SNAP will be included in the Foundation’s Freedom Index and will receive negative scores.
