Will NM see the nation’s highest insurance rate increase under Obamacare?

According to a new, interactive report from the fiscally-conservative Manhattan Institute, New Mexico will see the most dramatic rate hikes in the nation under the new health care law. According to the report, insurance rates will rise 130 percent with the next-highest state, Vermont, seeing rates rise by “only” 97 percent.

As Rob Nikolewski over at Capitol Report New Mexico writes, the Manhattan Institute is one of several organizations to have estimated health care cost hikes/reductions under the new law. Kaiser has its own set of calculations.

The fact is that only time will tell what the new law will do to insurance costs. Here is a detailed blog posting by Avik Roy, one of the creators of the interactive map. With the exchanges scheduled to “go live” in less than a month (by October 1), the law is moving rapidly towards full implementation.

If you want to find out more about the law, I will be speaking on an ObamaCare panel put on by the Santa Fe Republican Party on Tuesday, September 17 from 6pm to 7:30pm 6:00 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. at the Santa Fe Women’s Club which is located at 1616 Old Pecos Trail.
